Twitter update: How to re-optimise your profile design

Your Twitter cheat sheet

By Rhian Harris

A little while back, I reported that Twitter was planning a redesign, and now they are being rolled out right, left and centre.

But what does it mean for your business?

The main features of the new look Twitter include:

  • Best Tweets: Tweets that have received more engagement will appear slightly larger, so your best content is easy to find.
  • Pinned Tweet: Pin one of your Tweets to the top of your page, so it’s easy for your followers to see what you’re all about.
  • Filtered Tweets: Now you can choose which timeline to view when checking out other profiles. Select from these options: Tweets, Tweets with photos/videos, or Tweets and replies.

In short, Twitter now looks a lot more like Facebook.  I argued that this is to help reduce the barriers that users may have perceived in seeing the network as ‘too confusing’. So your brand might see an increase in a new audience as a result.

Images get a lot more prominence so sharing your content will now become more eye-catching, and potentially more engaging.

Profile designs have become more ‘branded’, therefore it is easier for users to ‘get’, for corporate social platforms to appear more consistent in creative direction, and for brands to differentiate from competitors.

What it does mean of course, is that you will need to redo your creative assets.

  1. Header Photo (1500 pixels wide x 500 pixels high, 5MB maximum)
  2. Profile Photo/Avatar (400×400 minimum, 2MB maximum)
  3. Background Image (no longer needed)
